Please join us at the Station Garden this Saturday, 9 May at 10:00 – 12:00

There will be a variety of gardening activities now that the Spring gardening season is well under way.    There’s planting of globe artichokes, sunflowers and chives,  tending the broad beans, weeding throughout the garden and more.   There will also be some early spring crops to harvest.

Feel free to bring along your own tools.  We have plenty of tools and gloves in the store, though, if you need to borrow them.

On a sunny Thursday afternoon in the Easter holidays, Charlton Community Gardens group hosted an event for families with children to become more involved in their gardens.

There was a plastic sheet spread out on the concourse at Charlton station where the children could make wildflower seed bombs to throw into the cuttings at the side of the railway or  plant a seed in a pot to take home.  Over by the birch tress they helped plant our seed potatoes in canvas bags to grow in the station garden.  On three little wooden tables eight young people worked with men from Men in Sheds to build a wooden bug house to take home.  Others opted for the quicker job of making a bug house from the plastic kit supplied by Kew Gardens.  Another highlight of the day was bug hunting in the Bug Hotel we built last Easter, with even a bee being captured in the bug pot!  People left with more things to do at home—seeds or chitted potatoes to plant or a young nasturtium seedling in a pot.
