This is the third year that Charlton Community Gardens has entered the London in Bloom annual awards.
These are “The Annual Awards …. where London in Bloom celebrates the efforts of London’s Boroughs, Communities, Businesses and individuals who do so much to make London a special place to live, work and visit.…”
In the first year we entered we were categorized as “Developing” and last year we achieved “Outstanding”; the highest award. This year we again achieved “Outstanding”. For the first time two CCG supporters attended the awards ceremony at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park. While it was great to achieve “Outstanding”, CCG also gained a completely unexpected “Gold award” in the new, competitive, RHS “London, It’s your Neighbourhood” award.
The areas of achievement commented upon included;
- the watering volunteers,
- the lack of litter,
- the re-cycling of flower pots,
- the use of the green bins of people who live close to the station,
- the planting,
- the family events and
- the links with other local groups i.e. Men in Sheds.
The development of the community orchard was also noted.
So congratulations to everyone who over the past year have supported and helped Charlton Community Gardens achieve such positive recognition from an awarding body. We already know how much local visitors to the station appreciate your efforts, as we are often told at gardening parties etc. how much people enjoy watching the garden at the station change during the year. Hopefully we will soon be receiving the same great feedback from the soon to be developed community orchard in Charlton Park.
