On the 16th March, volunteers and committee members were invited to the opening of the new garden at Sherington Primary School.
The garden has been nearly a year in the making. Charlton Community Gardens members were invited in at the early planning stages to assist with the project, and also applied successfully for a one off grant from Capital Clean Up. This was used to buy some gardening tools, planters and plants. Volunteers also assisted with clearing the site.
The garden will be used to support a whole range of activities and curriculum projects, including art, science, nature and literacy. Children with a particular interest in the outdoors and gardening, will be able to help maintain the plot and become involved in special projects through the school gardening club.
At the opening event we were treated to the school Glee Club singing for us, and a brief talk and a tree planting from the celebrity visitor, Chris Collins, the Blue Peter gardener.
All those who assisted with the project were presented with pictures painted by children, who had been using the works of Georgia O’Keeffe.
