Phase 2 Charlton Park Community Orchard – March 2018

A rather overcast, post-rain morning on 24th March 2018 was ideal for planting out more  fruit trees in Charlton Park; the second phase of our community orchard, funded by a grant from Greggs the bakers.  Fruit trees planted include apples, crab apple, pears, plums, damson and quince.

Making a hole for the supporting stake

Stake in.. Tree in…

The Worshipful the Mayor of Royal Borough of Greenwich was invited to see what was going on and to give encouragement. This he did. He even got his hands dirty and planted a tree.

Volunteers were up and out early getting the ground prepared.  Holes were dug, water system pipes positioned, stakes rammed in, trees planted, holes re filled, and finally trees caged.

Regular watering is vital if the trees are to flourish before they develop a root system that can cope with even temporary and short lived dry spells. Our new wheeled water carrier made an appearance, and will be used by pupils from Charlton Park School who will help with watering.

Welcome refreshments from The Old Cottage Coffee Shop

The Mayor joins us for refreshments

Thanks to everyone who helped get the work done particularly to Mike and Jane, who arrived soon after 7 a.m.  after flying in from South America the previous day.  Mike dug and planted and Jane organised the welcome refreshments which were generously supplied by the Old Cottage Cafe in the park.  Judy, Ruth and Kate also were key in planning and organising the event and recruiting volunteers as well as  purchasing and storing both trees and equipment for the planting. The knowledge, skill and muscle power of staff from the grounds maintenance team from the Parks, Estates and Open Spaces department of the Royal Borough of Greenwich was much appreciated.  Central Charlton Residents Association also gave support and encouragement.
