April 7th 2016. Our Family Activity morning. A great success despite the cold, wet, windy weather.
During the Easter holidays more than 25 children came with their parents and carers to our Children and Families Event at Charlton station. In two hours we managed to plant more red-flowered beans, to build bird houses and bug hotels to be taken home, do some potato printing (alas not using our own potatoes), hunt for bugs in the woodpile, litter pick and make wild seed bombs. Our bird boxes and bug hotels were prepared in advance and the assembly supervised by staff and volunteers from Men in Sheds.
It was a cold wet day; but still they came. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event. The pictures say it all.
Artistry cannot start too young
Hammers and nails; making up the nesting box.
Going to the next stage – Decorating the nesting box with potato prints.
Bug hunting in the wood pile
Making seed bombs – more purposeful than most mud pies, but just as much fun.
Litter pickers still at it.
Child -Power tool??? but it worked. And there is a bird box or two to prove it.
A proud owner of a nesting box.
Most gardens have little to offer in the way of colour or interest in January, however this winter has been so mild that spring bulbs have popped up earlier than usual and even our raised beds still have colour.
These plants and flowers were snapped at the station at the end of January.
We are very pleased to announce that two of our sponsors from last year have again signed up to sponsor beds for a year at Charlton Station. Thanks Headstart and Conran Estates. Our beds will now be guaranteed their mulch and manure as well as additional plants for the surrounding area.
We still have beds which need sponsors. To have your company logo and acknowledgement of your sponsorship on one of our beds, the fee is £100. Please get in touch via email to Charltoncommunitygardens@gmail.com.
